Re: Request for promotional budget : A table at Begeo (500 €)

Oliver May
Hi all,

Who is going to be there? Ik think we should have at least 4 osgeo members there, need a schedule for 2 persons permanently at the table, and some marketing materials (laptop with osgeo live dvd, flyers,...).

cheers,

Oliver

Re: Request for promotional budget : A table at Begeo (500 €)

dirkf
Moritz,

For the special OSGeo track we received 8 presentations for 10 slots.

I am *still looking* for a  volunteer who want to present something
about QGis: explain and show how you can use it, where you can find it,
and a simple use case to do a small analysis.

A sort of appetite to start with the software ...

During the last meeting there was a suggestion to use (the last) 2 slots
for a round table. The subject I propose there is: 'the economics of
open source solutions'

All the information is on
https://docs.google.com/document/d/18hpQWWeNLNOCxbxJR9HeNaeUptdOoNkxs4APq3U6hHM/edit#

I called Johan yesterday, as we have to decide the final program. It
should be put online this week. Once decided we can send a mail to all
the selected speakers with a request for extra information:

- confirmation of the final title;

- a foto;

- a short descritpion of the presentation (max. 5 lijnen);

- organisation;

- one or more links to the theme of the presentation;

- a link to the LinkedIn account of the speaker or a short bio.

- twitter-account;

- target audience;

- Language of the presentation (FR/NL)

Dirk

If nobody else answers I could do the presentation for QGis (as I did
for the Geospatial World Forum), but I really prefer to have more
presenters on the list.

Kind Regards,

Re: Request for promotional budget : A table at Begeo (500 €)

Johan Van de Wauw
In reply to this post by dirkf
Dirk,

some comments on the proposed schedule:
Titles:

 Taïs Grippa shorter: there is no point mentioning that it will be
open source. That should be the case in our track.
I would change to:
* Semi-automated land cover mapping using Grass GIS and python

Life watch infrastructure --> Lifewatch, online tool for supporting
the study of biodiversity and ecosystems

A free desktop GIS application named ‘QGIS’ --> QGIS, a powerful open
source Desktop GIS

I'm not too convinced about having both a round table and the
economics of open source discussion with (probably) the same people. I
think it would be better to add the presentation of Pieter Colpaert in
that case (and invite him to join the last session).

Kind Regards,
Johan

Hello,
If you want I can also do the presentation in french about QGIS or to be at the stand.
What do you think ?
Kind Regards,
Maë//e

If nobody else answers I could do the presentation for QGis (as I did
for the Geospatial World Forum), but I really prefer to have more
presenters on the list.

Kind Regards,
Johan

Re: Request for promotional budget : A table at Begeo (500 €)

Johan Van de Wauw
In reply to this post by Johan Van de Wauw
Dirk,

For the closing session I don't think the economics of open source is
really what the begeo audience is looking for.

I would suggest a QA session, QA session: how can I do xxx in open source GIS.

People could send in questions by mail or on the booth/during the
track (on a flipchart/...), and we can try to suggest them approaches
to solve their problems.

We can always prepare some questions ourselves (eg how to contribute
/....) to make sure we have enough content.

Kind Regards,
Johan

Re: Request for promotional budget : A table at Begeo (500 €)

dirkf
In reply to this post by Johan Van de Wauw
Johan,

The idea of the round table is just to give an introduction  and present
a question to the panel (5 min) about the economics of open source, and
then organise the round table 25 min, with the same people.

I think it is a good idea to invite Pieter for the round table, but not
to try to sqeeze in another presentation.
If we introduce another presentation about linked data (15 min) then
there is no time anymore for the round table ...

I think in 30 min there is room for only 1 question from the panel
representative and then one or 2 questions from the audience.
The panel members will have 3 minutes to answer the first question and
per question from the audience we onlu have 6 minutes per question: to
ask the question and let 2 people from the panel answer in 2 minutes
each. Time keeping will be essential!

my 2c,

Dirk

I interpreted this as being one round table. It wouldn't make sense to
have a round table of 15 min...

Also: are you sure you want to organise a round table in French with
only Dutch speakers ? ;-) I understand that there is a question of
balance between languages, but if Maëlle presents QGIS in French, it
should be alright to have the discussion in Dutch, or ?
For the round table, it might be interesting to have someone from an
administration that has moved to open source and could explain how this
changes the interaction with suppliers.

And as a small suggestion to the program: I would put the presentation
of OSGeo before that of OSM...

Otherwise, great job !

Moritz

I like the idea, but we would have to be very careful that this does not
degenerate into a "I tried to this in QGIS, but got an error message"
type of session. IMHO, it should rather be something like "What solution
does foss4g offer for this and this task ?". So, we should definitely
have a series of questions in reserve !

Do I understand correctly that your talk entitled "Open source solutions
for the Geo Domain" is the classic OSGeo-Live presentation ?

P.S. This said, I think that there are still many people out there who
have the problem of "if I use open source, who can I call when I have an
issue ?". Maybe this slot could also be used to present something about
the fact that more and more firms propose open source solutions with
support ?

I agree.
I think this is a good opportunity to mention our sponsors.

Dirk.

Johan,

I agree with another topic for the closing session.
See my other mail: we should prepare one or two questions, and then
there is room for one or two questions from the audience.

I think the audience is curious about what open source is all about, and
why we are so motivated to defend it.

@Maëlle:
@Moritz: I think the round table should be in Dutch and in French.
Maybe Maëlle can replace Berdien or Oliver to have a better balance
between the languages?

Dirk

Re: Request for promotional budget : A table at Begeo (500 €)

In reply to this post by Moritz Lennert
Dear list,
Dear Moritz,

This is my 2c for the subject about the round table.
Please review and comment, as we have to provide content to the
organisation so they can publish the programme.

We also need some names for the panel.

Already allocated:
Johan Van de Wauw
Oliver May
Somebody of open knowledge foundation (Pieter will give me the name)

The suggestion of Moritz: someone from the administration ...

Please try to iterate this over the weekend ...

thanks in advance!

Dirk
