RE: DRC Power Data

Hi Pieter

The Africa Infrastructure Knowledge Program has compiled an Infrastructure
Atlas for the Congo.  It seems to only be available on PDF on the website:
http://www.infrastructureafrica.org/documents/tools/list/interactive-pdf-map
s?country=189

but maybe you can access the source data if you approach the authors?

RE:ACCESS TO THE DATA FROM EXTERNAL DATA BASE

Humbulani Gadisi
Good Morning GIS Community

Please help,

I have developed a very good Gis system for the district municipality
with a very good database and server.
The purpose of implementing this kind of Gis system was to support local
municipalities with gis datasets.
I have decided to take my database to external(hosted by service
provider) so that local municipalities can also able to access the data
as they could not able to access from internal database.

The gis system is up and running and is also accessible from internet,
but the problem is I do not have control over the system.we are all
struggling to get access to database the District and the Local
Municipalities, When I ask what could be the problem, no one knows, but
they are says it could be a fire wall or general network problem.

Can someone help who know what could be a problem, please.

I tested your url. It opens and loads a bunch of ESRI looking stuff
but displays no maps. You will probably have more success getting help
by approaching your vendor - that is after all probably the reason why
you opted for expensive proprietary instead of free Free software - so
you might as well take advantage of their support services.

Good luck!

Tim

Hi Humbulani

http://gis.feziledabi.gov.za/viewer is the correct URL (you were missing a : ) - and it seems to resolve okay to an ESRI Flex based viewer, but no map data shows...

If it is an ArcGIS Server specific problem, you are probably better off in the ESRI forums.

Otherwise, I have known there to be firewall issues / slow access in the past when SA government departments or municipalities try to access data from external sites. Not sure of current experiences though.

The firewall is one primary suspect.  I created something similar.  The municipality in question was running their webserver on an MS Domain network (DNS).  There server which I wanted to get data served from was situated alone on a Novel Directory Structure.  The Novel server could not be authenticated by the Windows Primary Domain Controller because .... Yes, something like  that.

Hi Pieter

The Africa Infrastructure Knowledge Program has compiled an
Infrastructure Atlas for the Congo.  It seems to only be available on
PDF on the website:
http://www.infrastructureafrica.org/documents/tools/list/interactive-pdf
-map
s?country=189

but maybe you can access the source data if you approach the authors?

Network to access Server Web link is accessible by public via internet
But I cannot PING the Server ip I cannot PING the Server's domain link
gis.feziledabi.gov.za Telnet 5151 does not terminate, it shows black

RE: ACCESS TO THE DATA FROM EXTERNAL DATA BASE

gavinf
Humbulani

As Tim, Graeme and others have pointed out, you should be approaching
your service provider as per your support / maintenance contract. This
list is for discussion of FOSS GIS issues, including integration of FOSS
with proprietary software. However, yours it seems is purely a
proprietary setup. And it also seems to be mainly a sys admin issue,
nothing to do with GIS.

Also, your problem is too specific to be of general interest or
assistance to list members. If you don't have the in-house expertise for
this, there are consultants out there (incl on this list) who could
assist professionally.
