QGIS 3.10 GeoPDF creation greyed out

Philip Barlow

Hi all,

Has anyone been able to get Geospatial PDF export working? I had it working on a nightly build a little while back but now I’ve installed the release version of 3.10 the option seems to be greyed out in both the OSGeo4W installed version and the standalone version.

Hi Phil,

What gdal version do you have? What OS/platform are you on?

GeoPDF requires a fairly recent version of GDAL. If that is not available, it will be greyed out.

Re: QGIS 3.10 GeoPDF creation greyed out

Philip Barlow

Hi Andreas,

I’m on Windows 10. According to the OSGeo4W I’ve got gdal-dev installed (version 3.1.0-137) and 2.4.1-1 of gdal/ogr lib.  Doesn’t seem to be an option to update the latter.  I assume that the Windows standalone version must have been packaged with an earlier version of GDAL as well? As that comes with its own dependencies (I’d have to re-install that one and check).

Hi Phil,

Yes, 2.4.1 is too old. You need 3.0 or higher.

Did you also try the standalone installer whether that contains the correct GDAL version?

Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows computer at hand for testing myself.

Re: QGIS 3.10 GeoPDF creation greyed out

DelazJ
Hi,

Confirmed here too with osgeo4w: 3.10 has greyed geopdf but master shows it fine. Issue imho is that qgis 3.10, identified as qgis, is built with gdal 2.4 (as 3.8 was) while qgis 3.11 aka qgis_dev is built with gdal_dev (3.1)

That would be suprising.  The standalone is made from the same binaries.  And
as GRASS doesn't support GDAL3 yet, the main GDAL is stuck at 2.4.1 in OSGeo4W.

The QGIS nightlies however are built with the GDAL and PROJ nightlies.

Re: QGIS 3.10 GeoPDF creation greyed out

Andreas Neumann-4

HI Jürgen,

Oh - that is too bad. Do you have any clue when GRASS will be supporting GDAL3?

It is a pity now, because several organizations in Austria and Switzerland shuffled up quite a bit of funds to be able to support GeoPDF and now they can't use it, because the most popular platform of QGIS (Windows) doesn't support it.

And packaging a version of QGIS without GRASS is probably not an option either? Would probably be an extra burden for you on managing the packages ...

No, all that I could do I have done in https://github.com/OSGeo/grass/pull/137
and https://github.com/OSGeo/grass/pull/136.

GRASS builds fine with GDAL3 and PROJ6 - but I can't tell whether it actually
works.

That begs the 100.000 $ questions (maybe not, but a significant amount
of Euro's) :

Who can tell us if the present version of GRASS works with GDAL3 and PROJ6 ?

And who will activate it in Windows QGIS 3.10 ??

And when ???

(Is this a dark, sinister and secret plot to get more QGIS users
switching to Linux ? ;-)

GRASS people can and have.  As previously referenced:

In https://github.com/OSGeo/grass/pull/136#issuecomment-535176075 Markus Metz
states: proj 6 and gdal 3 are not yet supported, waiting for PR #118 to be
merged and backported.

> And who will activate it in Windows QGIS 3.10 ??

That should be obvious.

> And when ???

GRASS is maintained by GRASS people in OSGeo4W (ie. Martin Landa and Helmut
Kudrnovsky).  Once they update it, the next QGIS point release will pick it up.

Looks pretty close.  And I'm not sure that putting work into workarounds will
get us there any earlier as a little patience would.

There cannot be a dark or sinister plot to get more users to switch to Linux -
so no.

And now it's not even secret anymore ;)

For PROJ 6.2.1 and GDAL 3.0.2 there are also currently RCs…
