Managed hosting options for GeoNode as a service

Jac Steiner
Hi GeoNode users,

I'm presently reviewing available options for GeoNode as a service, fully managed solutions. The key features are that install, updates, and security of the GeoNode platform are managed, but the client obviously is the administrator for the CMS.

Thus far, I've found less than a handful of options:
  • MapServerPro - Looks to be a standard shared and VPS server provider specializing in GIS application. For $100 a month you get a VPS with GeoNode. It's unclear whether that includes ongoing support for GeoNode stack updates.
  • acuGIS - Also looks to be mainly a host provider. More explicit in it's feature set for GeoNode hosting and only $50 a month. Still unclear if ongoing support is provided for updates.
  • Boundless Exchange - They appear offer a fully managed GeoNode as a service, with one caveat -- Boundless calls it Exchange which I think is basically a rebranding of GeoNode with GeoGig enabled by default. Pricing is only available through quote request. I'm also a little concerned if Boundless's offerings may diverge from stock GeoNode, as they look to be jockeying to be the RedHat of GIS (not a criticism).
If anyone has more information on these three providers or others, I'd greatly appreciate it. Happy to answer any questions as well.

Best wishes,
Jac

Hello Jac,
did you considered also Amazon Web Services option? We installed custom dockerized versions of GeoNode for several customers already.

Cannot be much helpful on the other options as I'm not really involved on DevOps stuff, and I have no personal experience with the ones you listed.

Re: Managed hosting options for GeoNode as a service

Hi Alessio,

Thanks so much for this response, I truly appreciate your help.

In terms of viable hosting options, generally I completely agree with you, AWS is a good solution. But, in this case, I'm looking for a host that offers GeoNode as a service -- all systems administration is managed by the vendor (hosting, software updates, security of server, installation for all GeoNode components) but the content is managed by the client. Perhaps this isn't viable because GeoNode installs have a fair amount of configuration that can NOT be done from within a web interface. Theming is the major example that jumps to mind. Notably, installing a database and geoserver, and configuring them to work with a GeoNode instance is NOT what I'm talking about, as those are precisely the tasks I'm looking to be managed by vendor for the client.

Maybe I should enumerate a use case
A client wants to set up a geoportal and chooses the GeoNode platform. They have no IT infrastructure on premises. They have an employee that presently manages their Wordpress website, which is hosted by wordpress.com. This employee manages user accounts and permissions for access to the website via browser. All critical updates to the server are managed by wordpress.com. All updates to their instance of wordpress can be triggered using the web interface. The employee can also update the site to reflect branding changes using the web interface. When their use of server resources exceeds their monthly plan, they are contacted by wordpress.com and offered to upgrade their service to meet demand. The client is looking for a similar experience for their GeoNode instance.

Maybe this use case is better suited to ArcGIS Online, or something else. I'm all ears.

Appreciate everyone's help,
Jac

Re: Managed hosting options for GeoNode as a service

Uhm, unfortunately on GeoNode we are far from having the possibility to apply updates from the GUI yet.

A solution similar to this one, which still requires a minimum effort though, is to install GeoNode through Docker and Rancher.

We are finalizing in these days the possibility of automatically update the customized instance of GeoNode image through the Rancher interface, by keeping all the customizations, accounts and datasets already available on the geospatial portal.
