Issues with real time gps tracking and gps tools

DMDelorme
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 beta
Qgis 1.9.90 alpha
usb Garmin etrex legend Hcx

I can get data from xgps via GPSD
if i disable sudo modprobe -r garmin_gps
I can get data from gpsbabble as root and garmin_gps
david@solaris:~/Desktop$ sudo gpsbabel -T -i garmin -f usb: -o nmea -F -
$GPRMC,204823.000,A,4954.356,N,09707.507,W,0.00,0.00,230312,,*18
$GPGGA,204823.000,4954.356,N,09707.507,W,1,00,0.0,203.809,M,0.0,M,,*76
$GPVTG,0.000,T,0,M,0.005,N,0.009,K*5C

But i am unable to get real time tracking to work even if i star qgis as root
or use gpsbabbel to work or the gpsbabbel plugin to work.
I have added a garmin rule to /etc/udev/rules.d the system can see the gps
david@solaris:~/Desktop$ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 064e:d20c Suyin Corp.
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 091e:0003 Garmin International GPS (various models)
I love qgis / grass and have migrated to a pure Linux system although i can use mapinfo in wine but it really does not add anything useful to the equation.

any help would be appreciated i have this issues with previous versions of qgis and Ubuntu not the root issue.

I am not lost I just cant find my car.

Re: Issues with real time gps tracking and gps tools

DMDelorme
Well the root problem has been fixed to proper syntax is as follows
for Ubuntu 12.04 /etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="091e", ATTR{idProduct}=="0003", MODE="0666"

does the GPS tracking tool only read NMEA as my gps does have this protocol.
note to use GPSbabbel you must unload the garmin_gps module first.

sudo modprobe -r garmin_gps
thanks

Re: Issues with real time gps tracking and gps tools

DMDelorme
I retried the above with

QGIS version
1.8.0-Lisboa
and Ubuntu 12.04
With
sudo modprobe  garmin_gps
and
gpsd running i can use the live tracking feature.
