Issues setting the DGEOSERVER_CONFIG_DIR

Corina Tudorache
Hello everyone,

I am trying to set a GeoServer cluster system, but I am having issues setting the -DGEOSERVER_CONFIG_DIR variable. I am able to point my two GeoServer instances to a common geoserver-data folder, but both of my GeoServer instances point to the same cluster UUID ID.
I installed the jms-cluster extension. I have enabled it on both of my instances.
Inside the common geoserver-data/cluster directory I created two folders for both instances and set the CLUSTER_CONFIG_DIR variable to my both geoserver instances. But at the end I have only the same instance opening. At the "Name of this instance (generated UUID)" it's the same ID.
I am using Ubuntu 16.04 as OS.
Any advice is much appreciated,
Corina

Re: Issues setting the DGEOSERVER_CONFIG_DIR

Hi,

Several things here, first the variable to define the GeoServer data directory [1] location is:
GEOSERVER_DATA_DIR and not GEOSERVER_CONFIG_DIR.

There is several possibilities to cluster GeoServer [2] [3], it seems to me that you trying to
mix two incompatible approaches: shared data directory between all instances and the
JMS (active) clustering.

To use the JMS (active) clustering approach each GeoServer instance needs to use its own
GeoServer data directory. If your network supports multicast than you are good, otherwise
you will need to setup an ActiveMQ instance and configure the clustering module to use it.

I'm not sure what you mean by "But at the end I have only the same instance opening."
Each GeoServer instance will need to be running on different host or on a different port
if running on the same host.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Nuno Oliveira

Hi Nuno,

I followed the guide lines from here (http://geoserver.geo-solutions.it/educational/en/clustering/load_balancing/tomcat.html and http://geoserver.geo-solutions.it/educational/en/clustering/clustering/active/usage.html) to create a cluster of GeoServer both instances sharing a common data folder. I installed the geoserver-2.10-SNAPSHOT-jms-cluster-plugin.zip Next I would like to use the geoserver-2.10-SNAPSHOT-activeMQ-broker-plugin.zip
My problem was that I didn't know where to create the setevn.sh file. But I managed to figured it out.
Thank you for the response.

Kind regards,
Corina
