Information and Building Issue on Windows

Pierre Martin
Hi everyone,

First, I wanted to ask for some information. GIS are quite new for me but I want to give it a try.

I am currently working on a project that requires me to build my own GIS. I have already tried GeoTools but I would like to try some others before focusing on a particular one. According to the wiki, Ossim is a set of libraries and applications and the functions seem very interesting. However, I haven't found any documentation concerning the use of Ossim as a GIS builder.

So here are my questions : Is Ossim intended to help building desktop GIS ? If so, do you know where I could get tutorials and documentation? the doxygene link on the wiki is dead...

Here's the second part of this topic : I have issues with building Ossim source code on Windows and I might need you help.

I'm using Windows 7 64bit and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 SP1

Here's what I did:
1) I downloaded the source code via svn at http://svn.osgeo.org/ossim/trunk/
2) I downloaded the dependencies ossim-vs10-x64-sdk-20130201.zip
3) I installed CMake 3.2.2
4) I modified the batch file "ossim-cmake-config.bat" found in "..\trunk\ossim_package_support\cmake\build_scripts\windows" so that OSSIM_DEV_HOME, OSSIM_DEPENDENCIES and OSSIM_BUILD_DIR were correctly pointed
5) I ran the batch file that generated me the solution ossim.sln

However, when I try to compile the solution in Visual Studio 2010 SP1, I only get failures. Here is an extract of the log:

1>InitializeBuildStatus:
1>  Touching "ossim-adrg-dump.dir\Release\ ossim-adrg-dump.unsuccessfulbuild".
1>CustomBuild:
1>  Building Custom Rule ../ossim_trunk/ossim/src/apps/ossim-adrg-dump/CMakeLists.txt
1>  CMake does not need to re-run because ..\ossim_build\vs2010\x64\IDE\ossim\src\apps\ossim-adrg-dump\CMakeFiles\generate.stamp is up-to-date.
1>ClCompile:
1>  ossim-adrg-dump.cpp
1>LINK : fatal error LNK1181: cannot open input file '..\..\..\..\Release\ossim.lib'
1>
1>Build FAILED.

I would be so grateful if you could answer my questions and help me solving this building issue.

Cheers,

Sanity check first, did you build the ossim project first? I’ve found that sometimes cmake doesn’t get the build orders correct for me.
Additionally, i had issues using ‘newer’ cmake, i’m at version 2.8.12.2 and it works fine!

Re: Information and Building Issue on Windows

Pierre Martin
Hi Andy,

Thanks for your help.

I have tried to build the ossim_core_project located in the source code delivered through the svn but it didn't work.
When I try to compile it, I get those kind of errors :
c1xx : fatal error C1083: Cannot open source file: '..\..\ossim\kbool\booleng.cpp': No such file or directory

and this other type of error :
1>..\..\..\include\ossim/base/ossimReferenced.h(8): fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'OpenThreads/ScopedLock': No such file or directory
1>  ossimDtedUhl.cpp

I looked for those files among the trunk file but never found them.

It begins to become quite tricky and I think something went wrong from the beginning. I might consider starting again from scratch, could you explain me the main steps? I don't find the wiki so clear as for the building instructions.

Anyway, thank you for your time ! I really appreciate it.

Cheers,

Re: Information and Building Issue on Windows

David Burken
Hi Pierre,

I have a pre-built binary windows installer with ossim-geocell and all the command line apps.  It was built with VS 2012 (vs11), and QT5. Link:

If you install, cd to the install dir and source the ossim.bat file.  That will set your environment.

If you still want to build it.  You have to start with the dependencies.  That's the hardest part.  So your first error on kbool tells me something is terribly wrong.  We removed the kbool dependency a while ago.  Second error, you're missing OpenThreads which is a dependency.  OpenThreads is part of OpenSceneGraph, which is a whole build by itself.  Anyway it's tricky.  If you still want to proceed...  There is this.  Note that it's old.  But it might help you get started.   I don't have a current vs 2010 build.

Take care,
Dave

Hi David,

Thank you very much! I'll try that this week end.

Cheers,
