How do I install Geonode 2.6.3 on Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04?

Simon Lee
Hello, at my organisation we need to set up a new Geonode 2.6 server. Ideally we would like to install Geonode 2.6.3 on Ubuntu 18.04. However I noticed that the apt-get method for 2.6.3 does not work anymore in Ubuntu 16.04 nor in Ubuntu 18.04 since it relies on package versions which have changed.

Does anyone have any working instructions on how to install Geonode 2.6.3 successfully on Ubuntu 18.04 (or 16.04 as a second option) using PostgreSQL?

Thank you,
Simon

PS. I'm sorry I sent my first message as HTML, I'm sending it again in plain text and the first one can be deleted. Thanks

Re: How do I install Geonode 2.6.3 on Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04?

Simon Lee
I tried to use the manual install method, cloning the 2.6.x branch from GitHub, but when I run paver setup it outputs an error. I tried both "paver setup" and "sudo paver setup" with the same effect.

I guess that's because http://build.geonode.org/geoserver/latest/ is not reachable. I downloaded the official geoserver.war but it doesn't work because of auth. Any help? :)

Here's the output:

simon@ubuntu:~/geonode$ sudo paver setup

I'm running into a quite similar issue here - tying to install Geonode 2.8 on Ubuntu 16.04 - following the online tutorial. It could be the provided URL is not reachable or incorrect configs in local_settings.py file.

Dear Simon Lee,

If you are looking for [hidden email]. I will strongly recommend you to take a look in this project <https://github.com/olivierdalang/SPCgeonode>. Following the Docker Installation procedure, I think you may not face any issue in respect to Ubuntu version.

I hope it helps. I will be glad to help, if you need further assistance.

Kind Regards

Elton Davis Turin Espinoza
Hi all,
I also want to use Geonode 2.6 again and I can not install from ppa apt-get.

Please, if you can re-enable the installation of Geonode 2.6, I would be very grateful.

King regards
Elton

juliermeopensourcedeveloper
Hi Elton,

You can get a GeoNode@2.6.3 instance using Docker Installation. Take a look in this project:

I do not know why you are facing this issue via apt-get installation. Looking at https://github.com/GeoNode/geonode/tree/2.6.x. the site recommends Ubuntu@14.04. Are you following that?

If you just want to try GeoNode, it is recommended to use Ubuntu 14.04 and install the latest stable release of GeoNode.:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:geonode/release
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install geonode

Kind regards

Re: How do I install Geonode 2.6.3 on Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04?

Alessio Fabiani-2
I strongly discourage the setup of GeoNode 2.6.3. It is very bugguy and unstable.

2.10 version is much more stable and reliable. Try out dev or local setup through docker by following those simple instructions

About the build server, the old one has been dismissed. New one is available at

Patches already available both on GeoNode 2.8.x and 2.10.x

regards,
Alessio.

Re: How do I install Geonode 2.6.3 on Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04?

Dear Julierme, thank you: this is very interesting. I am trying the master-2.6.x branch right now.

However, I noticed that the master-2.6.x branch still uses the old build server, so I replaced the URL in /SPCgeonode/_service_geoserver/Dockerfile (line 16) with: https://build.geo-solutions.it/geonode/geoserver/latest/geoserver-2.12.x.war but it still didn't work because of a certificate issue. So I downloaded the .war file and uploaded it to a web hosting of mine and set the Dockerfile to download from there. At that point the docker-compose script was able to create all the containers successfully. I don't know what the issue with the LetsEncrypt certificate on https://build.geo-solutions.it might be, since in my web browser the certificate seems ok. I had the same issue using the paver install scripts for Geonode 2.6.3, so I don't think it has anything to do with the docker-compose scripts.

I am now waiting for the docker containers to restart and align. They have been restarting for half an hour so I am crossing my fingers :-)

Thank you,
Simon

Hi guys,

Please be aware that there is the plan to port the SSL certificate stuff to the master branch in the next weeks, so stay tuned.

Thanks,
Francesco
