GitHub bot to close inactive tickets

Seth G-2
Hi all,

I just noticed this bot popped up on an OpenLayers ticket I was watching - https://github.com/marketplace/stale
(example https://github.com/openlayers/openlayers/issues/2700#event-2376150702).

We have a Python script to close tickets after a couple of years at https://github.com/mapserver/mapserver/blob/master/github_issue_no_activity_closer.py

Seems like setting up a bot would be an easier way to handle this.

Any thoughts?

Seth

Re: GitHub bot to close inactive tickets

Lime, Steve D (MNIT)
I like this idea a lot, especially if using the optional comments and notifications so I'm a +1. Creating a "stale" label like OL did would make sense.

Reminds me that Even showed us another app to deal with automatic back porting...

I tried to install that backporting app during the sprint for the
project, let me know if that worked.

I see it in the available GH apps in
https://github.com/mapserver/mapserver/settings/installations
so that should work

I've just created a "backport branch-7-4" label that can be set on pull
requests done against master that need to be backported to branch-7-4.
Once the PR is merged into master, the app will try to create a pull request
against branch-7-4 by cherry-picking the commits of the initial pull request.
If there's a merge conflict, an email will be sent to warn about the
impossibility and the backport must be done manually.

Re: GitHub bot to close inactive tickets

Lime, Steve D (MNIT)
In reply to this post by jmckenna
I see the "backport-branch-7-4" label so presumably if that's associated with a pull request against master (the default) then the backporting app should kick in. Easy enough to test.

Regarding the Stale app, we'd had a "Too old - no interest" label that I renamed as Stale. Now I guess the questions are 1) do we want to use it (couple of +1's but no consensus) and 2) what the configuration should look like. The temporal settings in their example stale.yml file look reasonable (60 days until stale, 7 days until close).

I tried to install that backporting app during the sprint for the
project, let me know if that worked.

Already massively used by QGIS. And recently adopted by PROJ and GDAL. So I'd
say you can safely go ahead with it.
