FOSS4G UK Day. Was: UK Digest, Vol 100, Issue 2

Little, Chris
Dear Steven, James, Jo, and others,

For a FOSS4G UK day, can I suggest that the 19th Sept is better, as there is the big Inspire conference in Germany, 4-8 Sept, and the OGC quarterly Tech Conf is at the OS in Southampton 11-15 Sept.

This may help peoples' travel budgets if the day is back-to back with one of these. And perhaps attract a wider, non-UK audience.

Best wishes, Chris Little

Hi James

Big thumbs up that you and others are standing up to run a FOSS4GUK
day.

I am assuming that this will in some way be under the OSGeo:UK banner
even though you did not explicitly mention us? Let’s have a discussion
on the list as to how we can help/support the event. e.g. Do you want
to use the OSGeo:UK bank account?

I am willing to help coordinate sponsorship but I would like to use
this as an opportunity to get someone else up to speed on the process
and potential targets. If anyone is interested in helping on the
sponsorship front, stick your hand up. No experience or qualification
required but a thick skin helps.

Cheers

Hey folks,

After a bit of discussion this end and running it by some Geomob-ers,
it looks like we're going ahead with a FOSS4G UK day in September! The
current dates in the diary are either the 19th or 26th September.

Please let us know which date would work better and if there's any
drastic reason not to do the other here:

We are also looking for some additional help with :

Managing and booking workshops for the day
Sponsorship
Coordinating sponsorship (I think Steven has agreed to help a little
with this ?)
Organising the evening party (this would be very helpful!)

If you have other ideas about how you might be able to help please
let me know.

Hi All,

To back up what Steven has said- if you'd like to run it as an OSGeo:UK
event we can offer the eventbrite account and the bank account/paypal,
and
would give you whatever support we can.

If you don't want to run it as an OSGeo:UK event then that's fine, but
I
think you'd need to consider the possibility of confusion with the
name.
There are no legal constraints around FOSS4G being an OSGeo "brand" but
it's a long-established relationship (see
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/FOSS4G#Using_the_Name_FOSS4G). Furthermore,
I
would feel a little uneasy about tapping into the lists of sponsors
that we
used for previous OSGeo:UK events, as it would seem as if we were
passing
contact details on without permission.

Having said that- it's brilliant news, whatever the event gets called,
and
well done for stepping up :-)
