FOSS4G NA update

Rob Emanuele
Hi All,

Jody requested that I send the FOSS4G NA 2016 status that I have in the IRC board meeting onto the mailing list, so here it is:

FOSS4G NA as of early March 2016:

93 35 minute talks, 36 short talks, 10 workshops, 3 keynotes

Free speaker passes to the main speaker of every keynote, 35 minute talk and workshop.

Short talks were a response to the overwhelming amount of great submissions; instead of having hour talks like we did last year, we chose to accept 15 minute short talks, and give those speakers a discounted conference pass.

13 people coming on scholarships (61 applicants)

350 registrations so far. Early bird registration is over, and we are currently above the registration number at this point for last year's conference. We're cautiously optimistic that there will be a bump in registrations as we near the conference, similarly to last year, and that we will hit our targets.

Sponsors so far: 4 Gold, 2 Silver, 5 Bronze, 8 Theme day level sponsors
Call for posters & pre-schedule BoFs will be issued soon.

Receptions on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and post-conference event on Thursday.

We're planning on an unconference and code sprint.

OSGeo has a booth just as last year; we'll leave it to OSGeo to staff the booth.

Let me know if there are any questions!

Thanks,
Rob

Guess this may be a question for the event committee, or the appropriate local chapter.

Q: What is the appropriate local chapter :)

I would agree, last year I did the booth with members of the California
chapter. Note offering some discounted or free passes to ensure someone
is always at the booth does help. That and stickers.

Thanks,
Alex

Is that something the local chapter can manage - or does it go through marketing committee?

Jody,

It would be better to have it handled through a marketing committee - not every location has an official local chapter - we have an active local community but not a chapter. As of now we have ~5 local volunteers for the OSGeo booth (including myself), but it would be great to have a marketing committee member to set up a sign up wiki for us and get us all the material for the booth - I am not sure who has the actual booth and handouts and how this was handled for previous
FOSS4G conferences.

Re: FOSS4G NA update

Alex Mandel-2
In the past the Marketing Committee provided funds for local chapters to
buy an Exhibition kit for booths, to be used in the region as a shared
resource. In California we have a suitcase that gets passed around.

Some limited funds are sometimes provided for handouts. But in this case
because it's a Foss4g I think the conference budget should include any
handouts, as they would also potentially be given at registration.
Postcards and Stickers could be requested from the main Foss4g
conference, they are shipping boxes of those right now. Then I would
encourage the production of some Foss4g-NA stickers. Other than OSGeo
project business cards (need to be updated) there is no other ready made
handout materials these days.

Thanks,
Alex
