Early "warning": upcoming switch of SVN to readonly mode for planned GitHub migration

Markus Neteler
Hi,

later tonight or tomorrow (Friday, May 17th, 2010) we'll switch the
GRASS GIS svn server to readonly-mode, in order make the GitHub
migration [1] possible.

Goal: have the repo up and running on Saturday (May 18th, 2019) for
the upcoming community sprint.

Some downtime of half a day or so cannot be avoided.
Git experts: please be available for questions :-)

@devs: please keep your upcoming commits locally and don't miss to
upload them later on to git(hub).

Thanks
Markus

Martin,

Thanks very much for your efforts!

I have a question:
When in this migration process will the source download page on the web site
be changed? <https://trac.osgeo.org/grass/wiki/DownloadSource#GRASS7.7> still
shows:

"The development branch (trunk) version of GRASS 7 can be extracted using the command:

   "svn checkout https://svn.osgeo.org/grass/grass/trunk grass7_trunk
   #Subsequent updates:
   svn up"

Best regards,

Rich

Please allow for some days (!).
It is a HUGE effort to migrate the entire infrastructure of 35+ years
of source code, tickets, trac wiki, IRC, Travis, Web pages, Wiki
pages, finding as many github accounts as possible which are related
to us  etc etc.

We track efforts here:

https://trac.osgeo.org/grass/wiki/GitMigration#ImplementationofmigrationfromOSGeoSVNandtractoGitHub
- Pushing the prepared repo to OSGeo organization within GitHub
- Authorship: Recognizing the GRASS GIS contributors during and after …
- Needed source code updates
- Migration of trac issues
- New labels in the GitHub issue tracker
- Migration of trac wiki
- Aftermath cleanup
- Setup of Gitlab mirror
- Setup of OSGeo gitea mirror

As more or less 1.x people volunteered to do all this work,  it takes a while :)

Best regards,

Markus

Markus,

I understand this and that's why I asked only _when_ in the process this
might be done.

Best regards,

Rich

Say, one week from now.

Markus

PS: we just have to redo the repo ... so let us get that done first

Markus,

And if it's more than one week, that's fine, too. When it's all done I'll
change my script that updates the code base.

Carpe weekend,

Rich

The related pages on grass.osgeo.org as well as in the trac Wiki have
now been updated from SVN notes to git/GitHub instructions.

Please spot and report missing updates (or, in the case of Wiki pages,
please updated directly!).

Best,
Markus

The related pages on grass.osgeo.org as well as in the trac Wiki have
now been updated from SVN notes to git/GitHub instructions.

I checked download and development pages and changed some remaining links to point to git repos. If someone else sees something wrong please let us know.

There is still much work to be done, esp. wiki pages to be updated with git-based instructions and refreshing files like https://github.com/OSGeo/grass/blob/master/INSTALL to MD plus editing links to github repo.

Please spot and report missing updates (or, in the case of Wiki pages,
please updated directly!).

I'll have a look after lunch

Vero
