DCAT status in Geonetwork

Jo Cook
Hi Developer and User lists,

I'm about to start work on a project that might use the dcat plugin(s) for Geonetwork, and I'm keen to evaluate how they are currently working.

My questions:
1) dcat2 (https://github.com/metadata101/dcat2) works afaict in Geonetwork 4 but seems limited compared to dcat 1.1 (https://github.com/metadata101/dcat-ap1.1) in that dcat 1.1 contains thesauri, a harvester and other things. The readme for dcat2 also says that it's "related to the dcat 1.1 plugin.
2) So... does that mean I need to install them both, and is dcat 1.1 known to work in Geonetwork 3.10 or (preferably) 4?
3) Or, does dcat2 work in Geonetwork 3.10?

Thanks

Jo

https://github.com/metadata101/dcat2 is indeed "limited" for now (https://github.com/metadata101/dcat2/issues/1) but the goal was to make it generic and usable in any context. It does not depend on dcat-ap1.1.

https://github.com/metadata101/dcat-ap1.1 has a number of hard coded eg. https://github.com/metadata101/dcat-ap1.1/blob/master/src/main/plugin/dcat-ap/update-fixed-info.xsl#L73 elements which makes it probably quite hard to use outside the scope it has been done.

3) Or, does dcat2 work in Geonetwork 3.10?

Jose made a "dutch" DCAT 2 profile for GN3 I think?

Cheers.

Francois

Thanks

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your responses. I will explore what to do next and assist where I can.

Hello Jo, all,

In Flanders we developed the dcat-ap 1.2 plugin (the second link out of your question below), with the Open Data community in mind (so basically not the generic 1.2 but the template for the open community, more strict on some elements then the generic DCAT-AP 1.2 (keywords, thesauri, licences, formats, ...) and this plugin is compatible up until GeoNetwork version 3.8.3. It was not tested on further GeoNetwork versions.
Here is he link where you can explore both Open (1390) and Geo (6150) metadata records (7540 in total) in that one GeoNetwork instance: https://metadata.vlaanderen.be/. (Including 4 CSW-harvests, 10 DCAT-feeds.)
Metadata Vlaanderen then is harvested in our Geoportal from the ISO-language trough a CSW-harvest. But the same Metadata Vlaanderen instance is harvested to our Open data portal from the DCAT-language trough a DCAT-RDF-feed, where the Open geodata is exported via the GeoDCAT-AP way into RDF as well.

As for dcat-ap 2.0, we were not aware of the state of this repo: https://github.com/metadata101/dcat2.
However we are currently on the early development phase of a new plugin implementing a customized version of dcat-ap 2.0 standard (for GeoNetwork 3.8.3 too). XML-schema is created, editor too. Validation and export still to be worked on.
It is based on the dcat-ap 1.2 plugin for the dataset-part with (mostly) the addition of dcat services metadata.
The model we are using to implement you can find here: https://data.vlaanderen.be/doc/applicatieprofiel/metadata-dcat/. This model is to read together with DCAT-AP2.0 => the 6 working groups we had in Flanders, discussed in which fields to adopt from DCAT-AP 2.0; make Dutch definitions for them; tells us which fields we should make extra mandatory, or keep it optional as DCAT-AP 2.0 describes; have more restrictions or code lists behind certain elements; ...
The Idea is that this new pug-in will replace the 1.2 plugin. (We hope to be able to do this in the coming months - maybe March). The new DCAT-AP 2.0 model is backwards compatible with the 1.2. And installing the 2 plug-ins together on the same GeoNetwork instance will probably fail... For the new development (2.0) we used therefore another instance of GeoNetwork.

There is no open-source repository for this 2.0 plugin yet but if you are interested, we can push the source somewhere already.

Because we really would like to share it with the community, bring it back into the core, so that the community can use our efforts already, build on this further, and everybody can stick close to the GeoNetwork core for this DCAT-language as well. That way everybody can share development & effort.
Because there is a lot on the backlog for this version of DCAT-AP 2.0 plug-in and integration with the GeoNetwork core:
- make the DCAT-AP 2.0 plug-in proof for further versions (then 3.8.3) of GeoNetwork
- add the DCAT-AP 2.0 into the GeoNetwork API
- work on the export from ISO to GeoDCAT 2.0 instead of 1.2
- ...

So we are very willing to help & work together.

Kind regards,
Met vriendelijke groeten,
